Comparative Historical Analysis and Theory, also known as CHAT (yes — we’re really proud of the acronym!), provides a space for continued conversation between SSHA and ASA. Most of us do some kind of historical research, but beyond that, there is little that unites us: some of us work on modernity, some work on capitalism or empire, some focus on processes and temporality, and even while methods are a unifying thread, we don’t always agree about causality. Rather, our commitment is to a conversation that is international and historicized, one that includes presentations of work in progress, teaching and publications, as well as a commitment to reaching non-academic publics. If you’re willing to join the chat (terrible pun intended), please do so. We also have monthly flash talks and other events, as well as news and notes from around the world of historical social science–so please let us know about your publication, event, or opportunity! Our main goals are to facilitate links among and complement existing organizations, and to publicize resources for historical social science. Thus our organization is deliberately flat, and if there’s something you think we should be doing, once again, join the CHAT!
